Malted Double Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 reviews / 5 average

So, you know, I'm working on this little book.

And I need things to photograph.

So I stuffed a vanilla malt into a chocolate chip cookie and poured myself a glass of milk.

Suddenly I found myself elbow deep in this buttery, crumbly, malt-y, weird looking but seriously wonderful dough. And then I ate a few dozen half-baked malt cookies. Hmm? Book? Oh yeah, that.

But seriously.

Just to clarify a few things, the recipe calls for one cup of Crisco. No substitutions.

There are two types of chocolate chips. Not optional.

And don't get out your whole wheat flour, okay? I'm sorry, but come on. Just don't do it. Not this time.

One more thing. This is vanilla malt flavor inside a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie, and for that reason it's not the kind of recipe you want to mess around with.

This is, however, the kind of recipe you want to stash away in the vegetable drawer for a munchie sort of Wednesday night. So get your Crisco and go. Three two one go. Do it now, five four three two, four three two one. Go. Now.

Malted Double Chocolate Chip Cookies

These malted double chocolate chip cookies are loaded with milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chunks, and malt powder. Thick, soft and chewy!

  • 1 cup butter flavored Crisco
  • 1 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup malted milk powder
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chunks
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine first 5 ingredients. Beat for 2 minutes. Add egg.
  2. Combine flour, soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition. Stir in chocolate chunks and chips.
  3. Shape into 2 inch balls and refrigerate for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for 8-12 minutes. Middle should be slightly underdone and still puffy when you remove them from the oven.

It was all for the book, though. Really.

Can I write a book with you? I’ll just do the cookie-making/eating part, you do the writing. Really, it’s ok. I’ll make the sacrifice. And I’m thinking that in this “eat more veggies in the New Year” craze, I’m going to say Crisco is a veggie. Yeah, that’s right. It’s vegetable fat. I’m going to get my spoon.

Ha! I just re-read that (I came back looking for your orange glazed muffin recipe – on the menu for this weekend), I realized I said I would “make”, you would write – actually, what I meant was, you can make/write/photograph, I’ll eat. 🙂

I don’t use Crisco a whole lot when baking, but after having these cookies… it’s worth keeping some on hand!

I know – someone recently introduced me to dumping spoonfuls of malt powder over ice cream (but not blending). So so good!

That big bowl of chocolate chunk filled cookie dough is killing me! I’ll take that and a spoon!

How about throwing in a few of these into my birthday present as well?! They look awesome!

Coming right up! 🙂 I’ll just have to tell Bjork not to eat all the dough first.

I was totally joking about the no substitutions – I just didn’t want people to go trying to make them healthy or anything. 🙂 Do you have something comparable to vegetable shortening? Crisco is just shortening. For this recipe I used a butter flavored kind, and that might be harder to find, but you could try it with regular shortening or just butter!

If I got treats like this I might be able to find more time for 4th graders! 😉 (Mostly kidding)

We kept some of the rolled cookie dough balls in the fridge for “snacking”. They were yummy. 🙂

Me too! I love using chips of different shapes/sizes. I just love using chocolate in general I guess. 🙂
