For the First Time Ever

At the cabin |

Out of office! And for good reason. ❤️

For eleven years now, we've been going to a cabin with my family and spend the better part of ten summer days boating, eating lunch on the dock, reading, and picking wild blueberries so we can make blueberry pancakes when we wake up at 9am. We = me.

It's a slow and peaceful season that I look forward to literally all year long.

But ever since Skillful Cook came into existence five years ago, this time at the cabin, for Bjork and I, has still been a time that almost always involved some amount of work. Early morning drives into town to connect to internet at the library and respond to urgent emails, late night work editing photos and drafting posts after everyone goes to bed...

Bjork and I talk a lot both in person and in our posts about the elusive art of Balance, about using the flexibility of owning an online business to spend time with family and friends and what a true blessing it is to be able to do that. But the reality is that we're not always very good at practicing what we preach. We believe in hustle and hard work, and without that, Skillful Cook would never have become what it is (um, yeah -> my FULL TIME JOB - still so weird to say that). But we also believe in family, relationships, and rest, and because we love what we do aka become obsessed with things easily and sometimes tend towards insanity, sometimes it's hard to actually put those beliefs into practice.

So this week, for the first time ever, I'm proud to tell you that I'm taking a real break from Skillful Cook.

A REAL break - the kind where I don't schedule posts in advance, I don't keep my phone/computer/camera attached to me at all times. Although... the camera. I can't promise for sure on that one.

I could have (and almost did!) schedule posts to go out this week while we're here. But the truth is that even if I loved the recipes that I was sharing, I would've sat down to write the posts each morning and my heart would have been more in the coffee and granola situation happening on the dock than it would have been in a pre-scheduled recipe post, and your interest would have been smushed by the fact that I was being so MEH about things.

And so even though this is hard for me, I'm going to just keep the blog-boat afloat this week - no new posts, no new content, no anything. I'm staying focused on my most important jobs instead: rest, family time, and getting re-inspired with some new recipes and fun playtime with my camera.

I debated if I should even post this little out-of-office / at-the-cabin message because maybe it would be best to just leave things as is. But we are friends, and I had already made my dork hand-painted cardboard sign in a moment of preteen genius, and I couldn't just not show up for a few days without letting you know what was happening behind the scenes.

If you need something yummy to make this week, may I suggest the magic green sauce - again?

The biggest internet Xs and Os to all of you!

Kick back and relax you guys! Everyone deserves a break, a real break. No blogging, no real job, it’s great. My parents and my wife parents have Lake Front Cottages on Lake Ontario 10 doors down from each other. It’s bliss. Kayaking. Pontoon boating. fishing. I truly believe the biggest thing we can do for our success in business is to take a break once in a while! No better place to do that then by the water away from the masses.

Oh, I’m so glad you are actually taking a *real live break*!!! Even just from the standpoint of running a household, I know what it’s like having to work ahead for weeks just so you can have that *one* week of vacay…and I can only imagine once you add in all the craziness of food blogging! You both always work so hard…kudos to you for taking some well-earned rest time. All of us fan-internet-friends aren’t going anywhere; we’ll still be here when you feel you’ve recharged enough to blog. Have a great time!! <3
