Chocolate & Sweet Cream Marble Loaf

Remember when I used to work out?

Gosh golly. In our first few weeks here in the Philippines, I worked out every morning. And by worked out, I mean I ran for five seconds. It wasn't much, but it gave me license for an extra cookie.

Now I don't work out anymore, and I have a million reasons why.

First of all, I have this weird chest pain called costochondritis. I can't believe I just told you that, and yes I might be 95 years old. Just please pretend I'm normal for one second. This random chest pain makes me want to lay in bed and eat chocolate and Advil all day. There is no working out when this thing is kicking my butt.

But the nice thing about costochondritis is that it goes away. So, like, it's gone now. Annnnd I'm still not working out because I realized that it's kind of nice to watch TV instead.

Chocolate and sweet cream marble loaf stacked on a plate.

I am so bad, but I'm about to get worse.

Because not working out also gives me extra time for yummy TV snacks. Say, for example, a chocolate and sweet cream cake named “marble loaf”.

Oooooh it's so good. We ate about half the batter before this thing even hit the oven. Maybe it tasted so good because there was half of a can of sweetened condensed milk in it, or maybe it tasted extra good because I don't work out anymore. Funny how that works.

Oh my gosh. I promise to you, and to myself, that I will work out again in some way, shape, or form, someday. Now promise you'll make this and smoosh your face in it.

Chocolate Sweet Cream Marble Loaf

This chocolate and sweet cream marble loaf is a perfect quick and easy snack, breakfast or dessert. And it's so pretty, too!

  • 1 ¼ cup flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/3 cup milk (I used part milk, part heavy cream, because that’s what I do)
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/3 cup melted butter (or oil can work too)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder

  1. Preheat oven to 325. Grease a loaf pan with nonstick spray or parchment paper.
  2. Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar together in a medium bowl.
  3. Add the vanilla, sweetened condensed milk, milk, egg, and melted butter. Stir until just combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, reserving about ½ cup of the batter.
  5. Mix the cocoa powder with the remaining ½ cup batter and stir until combined. Pour the chocolate batter over the regular batter and marble with the tip of a knife, making “s” motions throughout the batter until the two batters are swirled together in a nice pattern.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of the loaf comes out clean. Top each slice with butter or jam, or serve with coffee.

I have no reason for not working out except I keep saying, “kids go back to school in two weeks, I’ll workout then.” In the meantime, yes, I’d like some marble bread to smoosh in my face. Thanks.

okay, so i made the chicken tamale pie last night…it was fantastic! and, i think i am officially hooked on your blog now. you are one funny lady and this not working out post just made me like you even more. i am currently training for a half marathon (don’t ask me why) and looking forward to the day when it is over and i can choose to sleep in and then bake cake for breakfast instead of getting up to run, it sounds like much more fun. 🙂

Good for your Ranee! I have done a few half marathons and I really enjoyed them (haha- when they were done, anyways). 🙂

I have costochondritis, too – when it happens, I can’t hardly breathe, let alone eat chocolate. The first few times, I thought I was having a heart attack! Very scary.

Hey we’re loaf ladies today {that sounded way cooler in my head}! I signed up for a 5k in September… probably should start training for it :/. I’ll start after I make a loaf of this marble goodness. Have a great weekend Lindsay!

This sounds (and looks) incredible…I’ve never had a loaf with sweetened condensed milk and I LOVE the idea. And not working out = not so bad. I’ve always kinda thought I might like to gain 100 pounds just so I’d have a real goal in mind with my workouts 🙂

I had costochondritis when I was pregnant and I seriously thought the baby had broken my rib it was so painful! And I’m probably going to have to make two loaves, because my husband will probably eat one before I get a chance to try it!!

    1. Skillful Cook Logo

I’ve read that it can be onset by pregnancy (which is not in my case, since I’ve had it for the last few years off and on and still no baby!) 🙂 but I can’t imagine trying to deal with the pain WHILE CARRYING A CHILD. You are a champ!

Just to clarify, chasing after small children (preteens for that matter) at the mall equals exercise! Love your blog!

    1. Skillful Cook Logo

So true!! Fortunately there wasn’t much chasing, but there were a lot of “stop-screaming-right-now” looks. 🙂

There are times where I just don’t feel like going to the gym at all! And yes, TV definitely trumps the gym!

So glad you skipped the gym and made this cake. It’s freaking gorgeous, and the perfect breakfast item! (It’s perfectly normal to eat this for breakfast, right?)

Sounds like the perfect way to use up that little bit of cocoa that’s not quite enough to make brownies with. Wouldn’t want to waste right?

  10. Skillful Cook Logo

I hope you get better soon. Life is tough enough without feeling like you are having a heart attack.

Thanks for the recipe. I think one of these should be in the freezer just in case some one stops by for a visit.

haha i want to return your workout question with – remember when i never worked out?! ugh, i really need to start getting shape for my wedding but it’s SO.HARD. to get in a routine!! ack! maybe i shouldn’t ask you to send me a loaf of this bread then….

I am looking for recipe for Cinnamon Sugar Donut Balls as shown in the September 2012 issue of Ladies Home Journal but can’t find it. Help!

  13. Skillful Cook Logo

I get Costochondritis too!!! It wakes me up in the middle of the night. My doctor told me to take 2 extra strength tylonol and 2 advil. I don’t know why but it works. Do you have access to those in the Philippines?

    This loaf is beautiful!

    1. Skillful Cook Logo

Yeah, I’ve been popping ibuprofen/acetaminophen combos like crazy for the last 3 weeks. I brought a huge bottle in anticipation that it would bother me while I’m here and I’m so glad I did!

I’m so deep- down tired, in a “I just helped 60 pre-k through 8th graders produce a 90 minute play, with only one week of rehearsals… As in we just got the scripts on Monday and performed tonight” kind of way. I am (was) just a titch crabby… Until I read the title of your recipe and everything else melted away. 🙂 Such sweet therapy you are!
I am so sorry to hear about your chest pains. How truly terrible! My sound medical advice is to bake all you want, then when you come home, I’ll just give you my wardrobe of the “skinny” clothes I’ve grown out of! 🙂

Oh my, I can only imagine. Kudos to you for taking the time to make summer fun for those kiddos! When I come back, you can help me exercise by going for long walks to Dairy Queen with me. 🙂

      1. Skillful Cook Logo

Lindsay, you must have ESP! The kids and I discovered that a Dairy Queen on our route home from Creative Arts Camp has half-price HAPPY HOUR every day from 2-4 o’clock. That there is some dangerous knowledge in my hands, as we have been to happy hour every single day since… 🙂

I just came across your blog and I’m so glad I found it! I just started a blog on 7/20/12 and I’ve been posting everyday, but wondering how I can do more with my blog. I think your blog will answer a lot of questions. Your blog looks great! Do you have any advice for me on how to get more exposure with my blog?

BTW, this recipe looks great. I’m gonna search around because I bet you have fab. recipes on here!

I have that too and it feels like someone is stepping on my chest when it gets bad! OR rather, ripping my chest bone in half. I feel ya! This looks delicious!
